I have just been informed of upcoming updates to the 2016 themes for this particular site: http://archaeology.yale.edu. I also manage a few other sites that have been customized heavily (http://classics.yale.edu, https://ycsg.yale.edu, to mention a couple) and I’m concerned about the impact these updates will have on the sites in question. Is there a way for me to find out how the changes will affect our work?

Thank you!

Hi Bjorn,

Sites that have not been updated to the 2016 theme won’t be affected until you upgrade them. I recommend waiting until after thanksgiving to do so for your older-themed sites. At that point, when you do update themes, be sure to check both Refresh my site into development from production and Add 2016 themes on my site, so that all current data on production will be copied to dev along with theme updates. Then update the theme on dev to see if anything breaks before going live. It’s best to follow this procedure when updating any site regardless of customization to be sure the new code doesn’t alter old displays.

The sites you mentioned: ycsg.yale.edu, archaeology.yale.edu, and classics.yale.edu will still be affected by module and security updates, but they won’t be affected by theme updates.

Please let me know if you have any further questions. I’m happy to get on a call with you.

Kind regards,

Chris

Thank you so much for this, Chris. I was wondering if you would be willing to meet given that I manage multiple sites and have some questions for all of them (forgot to mention https://egyptology.yale.edu). Perhaps the week after Thanksgiving? Also, forgive me for not finding what must be obvious but I cannot seem to find “Refresh my site into development from production”.

Thanks!

Hi Bjorn,

We can certainly meet after Thanksgiving. I’ll send you an email with suggested times and you can tell me what works for you.

Here’s the link for a site refresh: https://yalesites.yale.edu/refresh-my-site. The notes under “Choose the reason for your request” have the check box you’re looking for.

Best,

Chris

Hi Bjorn,

It was good to meet you today. I have it in my calendar to follow up with you on our discussions on December 15th.

Best regards,

Chris
