When typing in the search field the text becomes black and the background doesn’t show. It looks like the CSS is broken.

Kimberly, this is actually a custom theme (separate from YaleSites) so this CSS is something that was overlooked in the development. We can fix this, however, we don’t normally make adjustments to CSS unless it’s a bug in a YaleSites theme.
