Order people by people type (custom order, not alphabetical)

Hi YaleSites team,

We have a YaleSite for our research lab, and in the “People” view, we need to display people sorted according to a specific order:

1. By people type: The desired order for people types is Director –Postdocs–Graduate Students–Lab Affiliates–Staff (people type “N/A” is hidden). Unfortunately, we cannot get this to work. Currently, people types are sorted alphabetically (i.e., Director –Graduate Students–and so forth). This is where we need your help.

2. Within people type: Within each people type, people are sorted by last name. In addition, the Graduate Students people type is sorted by year in which they started the Ph.D. This works well, and should stay as is.

Based on your description, the only thing I see that isn’t working is the menu link to Postdocs, which I will fix. Everything else looks as you described. If this isn’t correct, please give me a phone number with which to contact you as there isn’t one listed in the directory.

Hi Fabian,

I think you’re all set. I’ve added a People Taxonomy that allows me to sort term in the order you requested. What this means for you is that, going forward, when adding another person, you’ll need to check the same category twice, once under People Taxonomy and again under People Type. See below. Have a look at the people page when you have a moment. Please let me know if you have need anything further. I will close this ticket on Monday, but you can always open a new one if you need to.

Thanks so much for your help Chris. This is wonderful. Two follow-up questions:

1 - We would prefer to not have two redundant people type/taxonomy categories. Would it be possible to merge them? I am happy to get rid of the original “people type” and replace it altogether with your “people taxonomy”, if that’s easier. Please advise.

2 - Can you restore the “Postdoc” view?

Hi Fabian – I’m afraid I cannot merge the two taxonomies, or just get rid of the people type category for this view to work properly. It would introduce more problems. I chose to add the second taxonomy because I believe it is the least cumbersome option when clients want to sort people types other than in alphabetical order.

The Postdoc view is actually there, but I don’t think anyone has been assigned to that type. I just assigned myself to it, and I showed up in the Postdoc listing. You can test this by trying one yourself as I didn’t want to leave my name under that listing on your site. Please let me know if this is not the case when you try it.
