Hello,

Is there any way to circumvent the function that resizes news items images to 500x500 (e.g. keep smaller images at their original size)?

Are you referring to the image in the View or the image in the News Article itself?

Unfortunately that functionality is built into the YaleSites theme which ties into the CSS Styling for the rest of the themes/templates.
