Image crop making new version of cropped image after every save

It seems that every time you save a node with an Image Crop field it saves a new version of the image… even if the image crop hasn’t changed. This isn’t necessarily a problem UNTIL the file name for the image gets too long and you can no longer save any changes to the page, as shown below:

The fix is to simply remove the image and upload the original again. I suspect that this is happening because automatic node revisions are enabled.

It’s very frustrating… especially from the content editor’s perspective. Is there a fix for this?
