Block fields not showing on some nodes

When using certain characters (e.g., the letter “A”) in the username filed of a user node,  the block fields (custom field) I’ve configured do not display. This is also true of a period. I can potentially see the period as an illegal character, but the letter “A” is a bit odd.  You will see an example on this user page on the Econ test server where the middle initial is present and hides the block fields.  Without the letter “A”, the block fields appear as seen on the same user page on the production site.

As far as I can tell, it is only the letter A when by itself. If the letter “A” is follow with another character (except a period), the block fields appear.
